A Day in the life of our Head Software Engineer
Why did you decide to join EQR?
After working in the finance industry in Sydney and starting a family, I wanted to continue my career on the software desk in a place that values work-life balance. EQR offered both the type of work and the culture I was looking for. EQR is free of bureaucracy and utilizes a flat team structure, and that makes work more enjoyable.
Why do you like working at EQR?
I work in an area that I love with great teamwork across different departments. I work with people who are exceptionally smart, and that keeps me stimulated. Our people are very open to new ideas and we are encouraged to think outside of the box.
What is unique about you role with EQR?
My access to users. While I worked on similar projects in other companies, we were rarely given this type of open access to users to better understand the workflow for which we were creating software solutions. EQR is very open in terms of access. In fact, most of my team and I sit on the trading floor. The traders and operations associates are very accessible to us and are happy to sit down with technologists and go over new business, which makes designing software for them a lot more fun.
What would you share with a person who is interested in working with EQR
I think the highlights are: the flexibility to define your own niche, the ability to move around so your experience is well-rounded, and the ability to learn something new every day. EQR also offers a fast-paced environment and uses the latest technologies in a business environment that’s free of red tape.
Walk us through a typical day for you
While my team is developing applications for the desk, I am mainly focused on requirements, business analysis, designing apps, communicating with involved teams, and keeping all stakeholders up to date on progress. Our priorities are mainly dictated by the desks we work for, but I also champion for resources and priority to make sure our systems are scalable and resilient enough to handle increasing datasets and complexity in the system.
